However, this should not mean losing communication with our surroundings: family members, caregivers, and others. This can be made possible through electronic devices that allow us to produce messages using a synthetic voice. In this talk, we will tell about the AhomyTTS project, which makes it possible for that synthetic voice to resemble the one we have now.

Aholab in the media: Faktoria

Basque Speech Recognition System available

From the Aholab Group and the HiTZ center we present to the public the new speech recognition system in Basque. This technological advance has the potential to transform the interaction between people and technology, especially in the field of the Basque language.

The system has been trained with 548 hours of Basque voices from different public sources (Mozilla Common Voice 16.1, Basque Parliament, OpenSLR), which allows it to accurately recognize the words and phrases spoken by users, reaching quality levels of WER less than 5%.

Two different models have been created based on NVIDIA pre-trained models. One of them using a language model with more classic techniques, and the other using more emerging technologies such as transducers. The training of the models was carried out on the Hyperion system from the DIPC servers.

The system can potentially be integrated into virtual assistants to perform tasks such as sending messages, searching for information or setting reminders. It could also enable the automation of responses to telephone calls, improving efficiency and customer service. And it will facilitate the transcription of audio recordings in Basque.

A demo of the speech recognition system in Basque is available at this link and the models are available at Gaitu-Data. The team invites the community to use it and provide feedback to continue improving the technology. We hope that it will be a valuable tool for the Basque community and contribute to the strengthening of our language.

Open position closed: Deep learning approaches for speech restoration from biosignals obtained from the movements of the face

In the framework of the DeepRestore project, acquired EMG signals will be converted into speech. Combination with lip-reading modality will also be tested. The main tasks for the candidate will be:

a) taking part in the design and performing of EMG and video recordings
b) to process and prepare the acquired signals
c) to investigate and evaluate different deep learning strategies to decode the signals into speech
d) to document the process and contribute to scientific publications.

The candidate should preferably have a BSc degree in telecommunications engineering, artificial intelligence, computer science or equivalent preferably with a MSc. Degree. Outstanding curriculum vitae, good programming abilities, education in machine learning and experience in programming is necessary. Strong motivation, team working skills, and fluent spoken and written English will be highly appreciated.

The Basque Parliament Speech Corpus 1.0 consists of 1462 hours of speech extracted from Basque Parliament plenary sessions from 2013 to 2022. Encoded as MP3 files, the dataset contains 759192 transcribed segments either spoken in Basque, Spanish or both (in Basque and Spanish).

Ressint Project: ASLABI

On Thursday, October 27, 2022, we presented the ReSSInt project at the headquarters of ASLABI, the Biscay Association of Laryngectomized Patients,in Bilbao. We had a friendly meeting with the associates and we answered the questions they asked us. We also explain what the recording process consists of. Several people volunteered to make the recordings, which will begin shortly. Many thanks to each and every associate for their collaboration, without which this project would not make sense.

2022ko urriaren 27an, osteguna, ReSSInt proiektua aurkeztu genuen ASLABI Bizkaiko Laringuektomizatuen Elkartearen egoitzan, Bilbon (Bailen kalean). Elkartekideekin lagunarteko topaketa bat izan genuen, eta egin zizkiguten galderei erantzun genien. Grabazio-prozesua zertan datzan ere azaldu diegu. Hainbat pertsona boluntario aurkeztu ziren grabaketak egiteko, eta laster hasiko dira. Eskerrik asko elkartekide guztiei zuen lankidetzagatik, proiektu honek ez bailuke zentzurik izango.

System evaluation

Como parte de la evaluación de los trabajos realizados en el proyecto ELKARTEK Mintzai tenemos una prueba de evaluación de comprensión de textos una vez reconocidos en un idioma, traducidos y sintetizados. Hay dos versiones diferentes, una para señales en castellano y otra para euskera. En cada una de ellas, se presentan seis audios y hay que contestar a tres preguntas sobre cada uno de ellos. Tras rellenar los datos en la primera pantalla, hay que escuchar dos veces el primer audio, contestar a tres preguntas de elección múltiple sobre el contenido y pasar a escuchar dos veces la siguiente señal, así hasta terminar con las seis disponibles. Cada evaluación lleva unos 20 minutos como máximo.

ELKARTEK Mintzai proiektuan egindako lanen ebaluazioaren barruan, hizkuntza batean ezagutu, itzuli eta sintetizatu ondoren lortutako testuen ulermena ebaluatzeko proba bat dugu. Bi bertsio ezberdin daude, bata gaztelaniazko seinaleekin eta bestea euskarazkoekin. Horietako bakoitzean sei audio daude eta horietako bakoitzari buruzko hiru galdera erantzun behar dira. Lehenengo pantailan datuak bete ondoren, bi aldiz entzun behar da lehen audioa eta aukera anitzeko hiru galdera erantzun behar dira edukiari buruz. Behin lehen seinalearekin bukatuta, bi aldiz entzun behar da hurrengo seinalea, galderak erantzun eta jarraitu horrela eskura dauden sei seinaleekin bukatu arte. Ebaluazio bakoitzak gehienez 20 minutu hartuko du.

Ikerbasque: Open Call

Ikerbasque – the Basque Foundation for Science, has launched a new call offering 20 positions for postdoctoral researchers.

These five year Fellowships are directed to promising young researchers; they are intended to offer a track towards a PI role and independent research.

UPV, 25 años a la vanguardia de las telecomunicaciones

ENRICH EU training network

 

“The fundamental objective of the ENRICH network is to modify or augment speech with additional information to make it easier to process.”

The network will train 14 PhD students and give them not just the necessary cross-disciplinary knowledge and research skills, but also experience of entrepreneurship and technology transfer so they can translate research findings into products and services that will help everybody communicate successfully.

 

Codefest summerlab: big success!

Codefest summer­lab is over! As a result there are two more languages (Gaelic and Basque Navarro-Lapurdian) added to our ZureTTS Voice Bank.
